Soft Tissue

The materials used for soft tissue augmentation can be grouped into autografts, allografts, and xenografts (Figure 5.11). The autografts (connective tissue and free gingival) remain the gold standard providing optimal predictability; however, challenges with second site surgery and quantity available has led to the use of alternative materials. Whilst the outcome to treatment of the materials used is similar, the allografts and xenografts show a greater degree of contraction shrinkage during the initial healing periods; however, avoid the need for second site morbidity and being off the shelf products quantity is not an issue. Figure 5.12 a–d show the use of the different materials.
